Kollywood had begun its journey with actors who could croon as well, think yesteryear superstars such as NS Krishnan, PU Chinnappa MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar and even Sundarambal to name a few.
As more stalwarts like MGR and Sivaji Ganesan took centre-stage; playback singers like T M Soundarajan, P.Sushila took a parallel route to stardom, albeit behind the scenes. But in recent times, we see the return of the season of singing stars. Be it Kamal, Vikram, Vijay, Simbu, Dhanush, Andrea, Shruti or Remya Nambeesan, the list seems to be only getting bigger with every film. In an unexpected twist of sorts, Power Star Srinivasan too turned a singer last year.
Iman’s good luck charm
Music director D.Imman has the habit of making the stars in his film perform a song, which he says, would go a long way in the film’s promotions. Sivakarthikeyan recently crooned the title number in Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam. Imman also made use of Lakshmi Menon’s voice for the ‘Kukkuru Kukkuru’ from Oru Oorla Rendu Raja. We hear that he wants to make thala Ajith sing for him too!
More recently, Vishal had sung a number in the much delayed romantic comedy ‘Madha Gaja Raja’ composed by Vijay Antony.‘Sakalakala Vallavan’ also saw Jayam Ravi turn a singer with the hit ‘Bulbu Vaangiten’ under Thaman’s music.
Trisha to croon next
Now, it is learnt that leading star Trisha would be making her debut as a singer in her new film ‘Nayagi’ under composer Raghu.
With actors doubling up as singers, we can’t help but wonder if this is the reason why singers like GV.Prakash are trying their hands in front of the camera!
On a serious note, we wish all the new multi-taskers success in their every venture.
