I play a today's girl in Iraivi - Pooja Devariya

Speaking to debutant heroine POOJA DEVARIYA reveals how multi-talented the youngster is. Chosen by maverick director Karthik Subbaraj as one of the three heroines of his next film Iraivi, Pooja is one lucky newcomer. As for her role in Iraivi, Pooja reveals, “I play a very today’s girl, who knows her mind. The film has brought out various facets of my personality right from acting, to dancing and painting.”

Pooja has been active in Theatre and is the co-founder of Stray Factory which designs original theatre content, “We have travelled the world with our productions and also have the Rascalas You Tube channel.” Pooja who is a Vis- com graduate and a dancer (jazz and ballet) plays a married woman in Iraivi. The girl who grew up in Bangalore before moving to Chennai, speaks fluent Tamil and has dubbed for herself.

Ask her about her Iraivi experience and she discloses, “Karthik Subbaraj was very clear about what he wanted from us. He also gave us complete liberty to express ourselves as an actor. So despite such a large cast, work was usually done in a jiffy.” Pooja gets to share the screen with SJ Suryah, Bobby Simhaa, Vijay Sethupathy, Anjali and Kamalini. One of the highlights was Pooja getting to do a solo dance number. “Sheriff master asked me to do a freestyle dance at the end of the choreographed song and I really enjoyed it. In fact, I joined the unit after most of the film had been shot. So this song was added later and at the end of it, the entire cast got up and clapped for me. It was a wonderful wrap-up as it was the last day of shoot,” she grins.

Iraivi is special to her for one more reason. “I was an avid rower but couldn’t continue due to an injury. The time I was recuperating from it, I started painting since it was very therapeutic. So for Iraivi, when some paintings were needed for a scene, I offered my abstract works and Karthik used them. I guess the film has brought out not only my acting but dancing and painting talents as well!” she laughs.
