Vetri Maaran’s hard hitting prison drama Visaaranai was the official Indian entry for the Oscars under the foreign language category. The film had garnered praise during its preview shows but sadly is not a part of the shortlisted 9. The final 5 will be announced on January 24.
The news was shared by Director Vetrimaaran along with the list of the hopeful 9. Visaranai was praised for its realistic portrayal of police brutality and prison violence. It was based on the novel Lock Up by M. Chandrakumaar
The film starred Dinesh , Anandhi, Aadukalam Murugadoss and Samuthirakani in lead roles. It won the Amnesty International Italia Award in 72nd Venice Film Festival. Visaranai also received high honors in the 63rd National Film Awards, it won three awards : Best Feature Film in Tamil, Best Supporting Actor for Samuthirakani and Best Editing for Kishore Te.
