The Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners’ Association have decided to indefinitely bring down their shutters from March 16. This is in protest against the State Government if they fail to abolish the local body tax levied. Their other demands include, approval norms for construction of new theatres to be solely handled by the Public Works Department (PWD) instead of CMDA; increasing license renewal period for theatres from one to three years; and, increasing the maintenance charges through ticket rates.

An earlier protest in July 2017, reduced the local body tax to 8% for Tamil films and up to 20% for other language films, while, permitting theatre ticket rates to be revised by about 25%. We have to wait and see if the State Government will relent and agree to their demands again this year.
