The Nadigar Sangam, or as it is officially known, ‘The South Indian Film Artists Association’, joined protests yesterday against the Thoothukudi Sterlite plant and the Indian Government’s failure to set up the Cauvery Management Board at the Chennai Valluvar Divisional Secretariat. The rally had the attendance of almost all of the film fraternity, including veterans like Kamal Hassan, Rajinikanth. Prominent Actors like Vijay, Dhanush, Vikram, Vijay Sethupathi, Sivakarthikeyan, SJ Suryah, Karthi, Satyaraj, Parthiban also made an appearance.
However, maverick actor Simbu was conspicuously absent and voiced his displeasure in an urgent press meet he called for at his T.Nagar residence. The actor voiced his disbelief in ‘silent’ protest, and said, “I have no confidence in silence. With the Cauvery problem, politics is taking place in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.” He went on to say that as the issue is only political, we should get a dialogue between the people of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, suggesting that “If mothers living in Karnataka say that water cannot be given, we accept it. But if they think that they will give water to the Tamil Nadu, In order to show solidarity, I am requesting everyone to post a video of yourself giving a glass of water to a fellow Tamilian on April 11 between 3 and 6 pm with the hashtag ‘Unite for humanity’. Let this movement spread across Tamil Nadu.”
The actor ended the press meet with a plea to the popular cricketer, and CSK captain – M.S. Dhoni to give his support for the cause, He said “I’m saying that Dhoni should fight in the Cauvery issue. I am telling you to express your feelings for us. Dhoni should support the Tamil people.”
