The Bollywood Badshah, Shah Rukh Khan who had an extended Cameo in the National award-winning film, ‘Hey Ram’ has bagged the Hindi-remake rights of it, on behalf of Red Chillies Entertainment.

Produced and directed by Kamal, the film faced severe opposition from various political parties across the country during the time of its release, due to allegations that the film portrayed Mahatma Gandhi in a grey shade. The film had an ensemble cast of actors including Hema Malini, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Atul Kulkarni and Nassar alongside Kamal Hassan and SRK.

The discussions for the rights of the film apparently took place when Kamal and Shah Rukh met with Hollywood filmmaker Christopher Nolan recently at a panel discussion in Mumbai, alongside Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, Shyam Benegal, among others.

Kamal Hassan broke the news to the press, “Shah Rukh only got a wristwatch for acting in my film at the time because, by the end of it, I had nothing left in hand. I am glad that he got the Hindi rights of Hey Ram from Bharat Bhai (co-producer Bharat Shah). He should have some memory of the film as he gave his friendship and service for it.”
