Director PANDIRAJ pulled off a casting coup of sorts when he got Nayanthara and STR together for Idhu Namma Aalu (INA). The movie is finally releasing after several delays and Pandiraj is upbeat. In a conversation with us, he discloses why every member of the audience will identify with the film’s characters and theme.
Pandiraj is known for his family and children-based themes so when he announced a love story like INA, which is essentially about post marriage love in an IT set up, we are naturally curious. We ask him why he chose a love story this time. “INA will contain all the elements my films are known for, like comedy, emotions, love and a decent family film without any double meaning dialogues. But it will have a different take on love. I believe that love is usually of three types. One is falling in love and getting married, secondly you have people falling in love with their fiancé after engagement and third is falling in love with your spouse post marriage. When people watch my film, every one will identify with one of these stages or aspire to achieve it. That’s why the title, Idhu Namma Aalu, for they will feel, ‘hey that’s exactly my kind of love story on screen.’” Pandiraj says that the love after engagement bit in the film is inspired from his own life.
Nayan captured candidly
We want to know about how the former couple Nayanthara and STR got along on the sets. “They are good friends even now after their break up,” says Pandiraj. “In fact Nayan liked the story and immediately said yes.” He is all praise for his heroine, “She is wonderful to work with. For a 9 am shot, she would be on the set with make up at 8 50 am. After Suriya who is so punctual, I have seen only Nayan like this. I used to call her a lady Suriya in punctuality.” Pandiraj seems to have used some quirky ideas to capture Nayan’s beauty at its candid best. He chuckles in recollection, “Before shoot, Nayan would be chatting on personal calls. She would smile and laugh in the cutest way. I told cameraman Balasubramaniam to capture her on candid camera as she spoke. Whatever smiles and chirpy laughter on the phone you see in the film have been captured candidly. Nayan came to know about it later of course.”
So what is special Pandiraj touch in this film ? “Well you will see it in the dialogues and the way the characters are presented. For instance, STR has no opening star song, no stunts and fights. It’s a completely family film like I usually do so Nayan is shown in churidhars and saris all through. I’ve even avoided showing her in nighties. There are no twist or thrills and people will wonder what I am trying to say through the film. It’s not new, but it’s not like my old films, it’s different. So then they will say ‘hey we enjoyed it so let’s go and see it once again,’” grins Pandiraj.
Soori’s comedy is going to be among the big draws promises Pandiraj. Ask him if he will go back to working with newbies and kids after working with bigger stars and pat comes the reply, “Whether it’s a 1 crore, 4 crore or 50 crore film, I’ll do all of them as and when the story and opportunity arises. I will continue to explore all genres.”
