Around 12 films were announced to release in this weekend, coinciding the Republic Day celebrations. However, many films including Vishal’s ‘Irumbu Thirai’, Sundar.C’s ‘Kalakalappu 2’ and Vijay Sethupathi’s ‘Oru Nalla Naal Paathu Solren’ had opted out due to unavailability of theatres. So, now 3 Tamil films and 1 Hindi (Tamil dubbed) film will have a grand release in Tamilnadu this weekend.

Below are those 4 films:

‘Nimir’ is a comedy-drama film directed by renown filmmaker Priyadarshan, starring Udhayanidhi Stalin, Namitha Pramod, Parvatii Nair, Mahendran, Samuthirakani, M.S.Bhaskar, Karunakaran, Aruldoss and Ganja Karuppu. It is a remake of the 2016 Malayalam-language film ‘Maheshinte Prathikaaram’, with changes made to the screenplay to suit the cultural and regional tastes of Tamil audiences. The film’s running time is 2 hours 10 minutes.

The film stars Anushka Shetty in the lead role, with Unni Mukundan, Jayaram, and Asha Sarath. The film’s teaser and trailer have got an extremely positive response from viewers and there are good expectations for the film because Anushka is said to be seen in a powerful role as in films like ‘Arundhati’, ‘Rudhramadevi’ and ‘Baahubali’. The running time of this film is 2 hours 22 minutes.

Mannar Vagaiyara

‘Mannar Vagaiyara’ is a rural action comedy film written and directed by Boopathy Pandian, who has directed hit films like ‘Devathaiyai Kanden’, ‘Thiruvilaiyaadal Arambam’ and ‘Malaikkottai’ in his career earlier. The film is produced by actor Vemal, who also stars in the lead role alongside Anandhi, while Prabhu, Chandini Tamilarasan and Karthik Kumar amongst others appear in supporting roles. The team planned to release the film for the Pongal season of 2018, but were forced to delay due to a lack of screens. Vimal had written an emotional letter to theatre owners to screen his film for Pongal, but later accepted to delay the film for two weeks. The film’s running time is 2 hours 40 minutes.

Padmaavat (formerly titled as Padmavati), is an Indian epic period drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Based on the epic poem Padmavat (1540) by Malik Muhammad Jayasi, the film narrates the story of Padmavati, a Rajput queen who committed jauhar to protect herself from Khilji. This is the third film in the combination of Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and actors Deepika Padukone & Ranveer Singh, after ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela’ in 2013 and ‘Bajirao Mastani’ in 2015. With a production budget of ₹200 crore, Padmaavat is one of the most expensive Indian films ever made. Initially scheduled for release on 1st December 2017, Padmavaat faced opposition from right-wing Hindu groups for allegedly distorting historical facts, despite Bhansali’s insistence to the contrary. Amid violent protests, its release was indefinitely delayed. Padmaavat is the first Indian film to be released in IMAX 3D. In December, the Central Board of Film Certification approved the film with five modifications. The running time of this film is 2 hours 43 minutes.
